Slavík, Josef
Slavík, Josef , Bohemian violinist and composer; b. Jince, March 26, 1806; d. Budapest, May 30, 1833. He studied violin with Pixis and theory and composition with B. Weber at the Prague Cons. (1816–23). He went to Vienna in 1826, then went on a concert tour. In 1829 he was appointed to the court chapel in Vienna, and became a friend of Schubert, who dedicated to him his Fantasia in C major, D.934, which Slavík performed for the first time on Jan. 20, 1828. Among his own compositions are a Violin Concerto (1823) and Grand Potpourri for Violin and Orch. (1826).
