Stevens, Horace (Ernest)
Stevens, Horace (Ernest), Australian bass-baritone; b. Melbourne, Oct. 26, 1876; d. there, Nov. 18, 1950. He studied at St. Kilda in Melbourne, and then sang as a lay clerk at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne. In 1919 he made his London debut in a Queen’s Hall concert, and subsequently became a popular favorite at major English festivals. He also sang in oratorios in the U.S. and appeared with the British National Opera Co. and other English companies. Stevens was particularly successful as a concert artist, excelling as Elijah. In opera he won accolades for his Wagnerian roles.
