SIDELIGHTS:

Danish writer Ole Hyltoft is the author of many books, including the novel Mordet på museet ("Murder in the Museum"), which was reviewed by Sven H. Rossel in World Literature Today. The museum of the title, based on a contemporary art museum south of Copenhagen, is managed by director Ann Belgrave, who, Hyltoft implies, got the job by enhancing her resume and sleeping with the mayor. Hyltoft was criticized for alluding to real characters in this novel, although he had done so before with little comment. Rossel wrote that Hyltoft "uses here a certain literary genre primarily in order to aim his satire at charlatanism in politics and art, abuse of power, and a snobbish but truly ignorant upper class. Granted, Hyltoft's satire can be quite impertinent and relentless, but mostly it hits the mark." Although this book is basically a detective novel, Rossel noted that a parallel could be drawn between the story and Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes.

The protagonists are journalist Jes, who solves several murders and exposes corruption, and his daughter, Dina. The story includes romance and what Rossel described as a "strange yet fascinating sexual encounter between Jes and Ann, which in its erotic tension between passion and frigidity, fire and ice, can be matched by only a very few Danish writers."
