Nightingale ward
Nightingale ward (nyt-in-gayl) n. a large open-plan ward that provides dormitory-style accommodation for hospital in-patients. This now outdated design offers patients little personal privacy or peace, and the closure of Nightingale wards for elderly patients was mandated by the National Service Framework for Older People in 2001.
