whiplash injury (wip-lash) n. tears to the ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the neck resulting from sudden jerking back of the head and neck, usually following a rear-end motor-vehicle collision. It causes pain and stiffness in the neck; symptoms occasionally last for months or even years.
