"BIOMETRICS" FOR HUMAN IDENTIFICATION
In many security applications, it is valuable to recognize a person automatically, or to confirm his/her claimed identity. The field of biometrics uses pattern recognition techniques for this purpose. For example, an image of the eye can be used to obtain features that describe the pattern in someone's iris. One bank has used the technique to confirm customer identity at automated teller machines (ATMs).
