Christian, Ewan
Christian, Ewan (1814–95). British architect, he established his own practice in 1842, and was architect and consultant to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from 1850. His churches tend to be robust and powerful works of the Gothic Revival, and include St Mark's, Leicester (1869–72). His best-known building is the National Portrait Gallery, London (1890–5), in an Italian Renaissance style. He carried our various restorations of medieval buildings, some more drastic than others. His major works at Southwell Minster, Notts. (1848–88), included the two pyramidal roofs that cap the western towers.
