Rossi, Domenico Egidio
Rossi, Domenico Egidio (fl. 1689–1708). Italian architect. He appears to have played an important role in the development of Baroque architecture in Central Europe. He probably designed the Palais Caprara-Geymüller in Wallnerstrasse, Vienna (1687–8), and energetically supervised the works at Hradčany Castle, Prague, in the 1690s. He made designs (c.1690) for the Gartenpalais Liechtenstein, some of which survive, and for the Czernin gardens at Leopoldstadt (1696—destroyed), both in Vienna. Other designs included the vast Schloss Rastatt (1698–1707—for the Margrave Ludwig (reigned 1677–1707) ), the palace at Durlach (from 1698—for Margrave Friedrich V of Baden-Durlach (reigned 1677–1709), and other works in Baden. He seems to have sailed close to the wind, had to flee Prague after a brawl in 1693, and a warrant was issued for his arrest in 1709 for defects at Schloss Rastatt.
