Killiecrankie, battle of
Killiecrankie, battle of, 1689. Dundee's campaign for James VII in Scotland in the spring of 1689 led to a chase through the glens between his small force and a slightly larger Williamite army under Hugh Mackay. On 27 July Mackay's men were caught in the pass of Killiecrankie, near Pitlochry, and badly beaten. But Dundee was shot in the side and killed. The Jacobite campaign lost impetus and disintegrated after the check at Dunkeld in August.
