Pole, Edmund de la, 3rd duke of Suffolk

Pole, Edmund de la, 3rd duke of Suffolk (c.1472–1513). Pole's mother was Elizabeth, sister to Edward IV and Richard III: Henry VIII's mother was his first cousin. Pole was therefore close to the throne, a dangerous position in Tudor times. He succeeded his father as duke in 1492 but because the family had lost estates was recognized as earl only. His elder brother John, earl of Lincoln, had perished in rebellion at Stoke in 1487. Henry VII gave him the Garter around 1496 but in 1501 he resumed the title of duke, went abroad, and set up as Yorkist claimant. He was attainted, handed back to Henry VII and placed in the Tower. Henry VIII had him executed in May 1513.
