-aster repr. L. -āster (whence F. -âtre), suffix of sbs. and adjs. expressing incomplete resemblance, and hence gen. of pejorative force; e.g. philosophaster petty philosopher, oleaster wild olive. The best-known comp. in Eng. is POETASTER, on which was modelled criticaster.
