putsch a violent attempt to ovethrow a government; a coup. The word is Swiss German, originally ‘knock, thrust, blow’, and is recorded from the early 20th century; it is used particularly in connection with Hitler's unsuccessful attempt at an uprising in Munich, 1923–4.
