Rivera Maestre, Miguel (1806–1888)

Miguel Rivera Maestre (b. 1806; d. 1888), prominent architect in nineteenth-century Guatemala. Together with his brother, Julián Rivera Maestre, also an architect, or individually, the two designed and planned most of the major public buildings of the era, including the Sociedad Económica building, which later became the home of the national congress. Miguel was in charge of the planning and construction of the Teatro Carrera, the national theater in Guatemala City, until he resigned for political reasons and was replaced by the German architect José Beckers. Miguel also drew the first detailed maps of Guatemala City and was responsible for the country's first atlas, Atlas del Estado de Guatemala (1832).
