Bendigo (bĕn´dĬgō), city (1991 pop. 57,427), Victoria, SE Australia. Founded in 1851 during the gold rush, Bendigo was the center for the greatest goldfield in Victoria. Mining continues, but the city is now an industrial, railroad, tourist, and commercial center in a livestock and dairy-farming region. Textiles, bricks, and pottery are manufactured in Bendigo.
