PATRIARCHS

From the Latin word pater, meaning "father." In the Jewish tradition this word designates the three "fathers" of the nation of Israel: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Afterward, this title was given to the bishops of Rome, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch, and Constantinople. Toward the end of the seventh century, the patriarch of Constantinople was recognized as the primate of the entire Orient.
