Barddhaman

Barddhaman (bär´dəmən, bûr´–), formerly Burdwan (bərdwän´), city (1991 pop. 245,079), West Bengal state, E central India. It has industries in hosiery and tools, but is best known for its 108 linga (phallic) temples dedicated to Shiva. Barddhaman is a district administrative center, a communications center, and the seat of a major university. A hydroelectric project on the nearby Damodar River has aided the city's growth.
