Caesarea Palestinae (sĕsərē´ə pălĬstī´nē, sĕzə–, sēzə–), city, NW ancient Palestine, c.20 mi (32 km) S of Mt. Carmel. It was taken (104 BC) by Alexander Jannaeus, leader of the Maccabees, and was made (30 BC) the capital of Herod the Great. The Jewish citizens were massacred by the Romans in AD 66.
