Chioggia (kyôd´jä), city (1991 pop. 53,179), Venetia, NE Italy, on a small island at the southern end of the Lagoon of Venice (an arm of the Gulf of Venice), connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is an important fishing port and commercial center. In 1379–80 several naval battles were fought off Chioggia in the war between Venice and Genoa. The liberation of the town from the Genoese turned the war in favor of Venice. Old houses and churches, canals, and sailboats help make Chioggia a picturesque tourist spot.
