Hvorostovsky, Dmitri Aleksandrovich
Dmitri Aleksandrovich Hvorostovsky, 1962–, Russian lyric baritone, b. Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Known for his passionate and vocally mellifluous performances, broad repertoire, superb technique, and dramatic stage presence, he gained wide international attention when he won several international competitions (1987–89). Hvorostovsky debuted in Western Europe in 1989 in Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades in Nice, France, and in the title role in Eugene Onegin in Italy. His American debut (1993) was at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in Verdi's La Traviata; he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera two years later. In recent years he has particularly concentrated on the works of Verdi and, in recital, on Russian song.
