Tischendorf, Lobegott Friedrich Konstantin von
Lobegott Friedrich Konstantin von Tischendorf (lō´bəgôt frē´drĬkh kôn´stäntēn fən tĬsh´əndôrf), 1815–74, German biblical critic. In 1844 he discovered in the monastery of St. Catherine on Mt. Sinai a few pages of one of the oldest Greek manuscripts of the Bible, and in 1859, with the cooperation of the Russian government, he obtained the remainder of the manuscript, the Codex Sinaiticus, of which a facsimile was published at St. Petersburg in 1862. He made several critical editions of the Bible, his eighth edition of the New Testament (3 vol., 1869–94) being the most important.
