West Haven

West Haven, town (1990 pop. 54,021), New Haven co., S Conn., a suburb across the West River from New Haven; settled 1638, inc. as a separate borough 1873. Although mainly residential, there are diversified manufacturing industries, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The production of buckles dates from the 1850s. In the American Revolution, the town was pillaged (1779) by the British. The Univ. of New Haven is there. Of colonial interest are two 17th-century saltbox houses.
