Maitri
Maitri (Skt., ‘kindness’; Pāli, metta). A major virtue in Buddhism. It is generous benevolence to all, which is free from attachment or calculation of reciprocal interests. Its cultivation is a specific Theravādin meditation-practice, and its nature is explored in the Metta-sutta. That sutta is recited daily by monks, and often by laypeople.
