AELIAN ° (Claudius Aelianus ; c. 170–235 c.e.), Greek sophist. Aelian mentions the Jews in several places. In Varia Historia, 12, 35, he includes the Jewish Sibyls (see *Apocalypse) in a list of *Sibylline oracles. In his De Natura Animalium, 6, 17, he tells of a snake enamored of a girl in Judea during the reign of Herod. He also mentions the deer on Mount Carmel.
