ZOHARY, MICHAEL
ZOHARY, MICHAEL (1898–1983), Israeli botanist. Zohary was born in Bobrka, E. Galicia, and went to Ereẓ Israel in 1920. He joined a team of research workers at the Hebrew University under Alexander *Eig. Zohary wrote Olam ha-Ẓemaḥim (1954), Géobotanikah (1955), and Flora Palaestina (2 vols., 1966). Together with Naomi Feinbrun, Zohary published the Flora of the Land of Israel (Heb. and Eng., 3 folios, 1945–55). His research covered a wide section of the Middle East and led to his publishing more than 100 papers and books on the flora of the area. In 1952 he was appointed professor of botany at the Hebrew University and in 1954 he was awarded the Israel Prize in Science.
