Eurypharyngidae
Eurypharyngidae (gulper; superorder Elopomorpha, order Anguilliformes) A family of deep-sea fish that have an enormous mouth capable of accommodating very large prey. The body itself tapers down toward a very thin tail region. As gulpers live at depths of more than 2000 m, the large mouth presumably is an adaptation to scarcity of food in that region. The relatively common Eupharynx pelecanoides (gulper) is not a large fish, rarely exceeding 60 cm in length.
