Microcystis A phycological genus of ‘blue-green algae’ (cyanobacteria) in which the small cells are densely packed in mucilage to form irregularly shaped, often perforated colonies. They are planktonic in freshwater environments (e.g. lakes, bogs, etc.). Some strains of M. aeruginosa produce one or more toxins, and blooms of these strains in reservoirs have been responsible for the poisoning of water supplies. The genus will probably be incorporated into the cyanobacterial genus Synechocystis.
