Indian doctor who reportedly served as court physician for Kanishka (r. c. 78-103), or at least for the ruling Kushan dynasty. A student of the Hindu medical system known as Ayurveda, Charaka is said to have mentioned some 500 drugs in the Charaka Samhita, a well known treatise on medicine.
