American biochemist whose research into the properties of enzymes was recognized with the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1972. Anfinson conducted and collaborated on research into many aspects of enzyme chemistry, seeking to learn more about how these vital molecules catalyze and mediate biological functions. Without enzymes, it is likely that nonbacterial life could not exist at all, and most bacterial life would cease as well. Anfinson's work led to a greater understanding of their importance and properties.
