Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt
Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt
1813-1848?
German naturalist and explorer who made several expeditions into the Australian interior. Setting forth from Brisbane in 1844, Leichhardt was presumed lost until he appeared in Sydney two years later. In 1848 he set forth for his third journey across the continent but disappeared with his entire party without a trace. Although searches were made for over a century afterwards, they were never found. Leichhardt was considered a national hero at the time of his disappearance.
