Guy Patin
1601-1672
French physician who first documented FOP, or fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, a disease wherein bones grow in connective tissue. In 1692, a patient with what is now known as FOP went to Patin, who recorded the encounter in his writings. Leader of the Paris medical community, Patin was outspoken in his opposition to the social-service programs administered by Théophraste Renaudot (1586?-1653), who advocated free medical treatment for the poor.
