Jean Gaston Darboux
Jean Gaston Darboux
1842-1917
French mathematician who made important contributions to differential geometry and analysis. Darboux made important discoveries in the studies of one surface rolling over another, a difficult process to describe mathematically. He also had a rare ability to combine both algebraic and geometrical approaches to some problems, arriving at solutions that were both elegant and brilliant. Darboux was considered one of the finest teachers of mathematics and he received many honors as both a teacher and a mathematician.
