Samuel-Auguste-André-David Tissot

1728-1797

Swiss physician and medical writer who collaborated with a distinguished group of physicians interested in social and medical reforms. Tissot and his colleagues attempted to apply their medical knowledge to improve private and public health practices, professional training, and society in general. Tissot's work includes an important study of inoculation entitled Inoculation Vindicated (1754) as well as Advice to the People on Their Health (1761). His Onanisme (1760), a treatise on masturbation, however, has become the work by which he is most known today.
