Thomas Gold

1920-

Austrian-born, British astronomer who proposed the steady-state theory of the universe in which the density of matter is kept constant by the continuous creation of matter throughout the expanding universe. An alternative explanation, the Big Bang Theory, is now more accepted, however. Gold also explained pulsars as revolving neutron stars and developed theories for the origin of the universe and for living organisms. He was an early proponent of space exploration.
