poverty line The ‘line’ that sets the boundary, and consequently the numbers, of the poor. There is much controversy over where and how it should be drawn. In Britain, the most common definition of poverty involves drawing the line in terms of the receipt of income support (‘social security’), formerly supplementary benefit payments. Families and individuals who receive such support are deemed to be in poverty.
