American civil-rights activist. Born Marie Priscilla Martin on Oct 24, 1917, in Wilcox Co., Alabama; died Sept 6, 2003, in Selma, AL; children: 3.
Returned to high school late in life and went on to college to study dental hygiene; became involved with civil-rights movement and helped in effort to educate African-Americans about voter registration; was beaten by police during voting-rights march in Selma (1965); continued to fight for civil rights into old age, leading fight for housing for poor in Selma, AL.
