Northern Ireland politician. Born April 26, 1946, in Warrenpoint, Co. Down, Northern Ireland.
Began career as a nurse, then became active in the civil-rights movement; representing SDLP, elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for South Belfast (1998); named minister of Employment and Learning (2001).
