Poisson, Madeleine-Angelique (1684–1770)
French playwright. Name variations: Madeleine-Angélique, Gabriel de Gomez; Madeleine Angelique Poisson de Gomez; Madame de Gomez. Born MadeleineAngelique Poisson in 1684 in Paris, France; died 1770; dau. of Paul Poisson (actor).
One of few women to have plays performed at Comédie Française, wrote Habis (1714), one of most successful plays of1700–15; other plays include Semiramis (1704), Cléarque, tyran d'Héraclée (1717), and Marsidie, reine des Cimbres (1735); volumes of short prose include Journées amusantes (1722–31), La Belle Assemblée (1750), and Cent Nouvelles (1811); her collections of short fiction also enjoyed popular success.
