Châteaubriant, Comtesse de (c. 1490–1537)
Châteaubriant, Comtesse de (c. 1490–1537)
French mistress of King Francis I. Name variations: Madame de Chateaubriant or Chateaubriand; Françoise de Foix. Born around 1490; died at Châteaubriant, France, on October 16, 1537.
Comtesse de Châteaubriant was the first of many mistresses of Francis I, king of France (r. 1515–1547). The love poems and letters attributed to the pair may not be genuine, however, and the countess had little, if any, political influence. Her successor was the more powerful Anne d'Heilly, duchesse d'Étampes .
