Arthur and the Invisibles ★ Arthur et les Minimoys 2006 (PG)

Maybe it makes sense to the French. Besson tackles kiddie fantasy in this mishmash combo of CGI and live-action. Arthur (Highmore) lives with his grandma (Farrow), who is about to lose their debt-ridden home. Arthur needs to follow clues left by grandpa to some rubies hidden in the land of the Minimoys, who look like fairies and happen to live in the backyard. A little hocuspocus, and Arthur becomes mini, gets some help from the inhabitants, and goes after the gems, which are held by evil Maltazard (Bowie). Film's voices are frequently out of sync (it was dubbed from French) and since it's remarkably talky, this is a notable distraction (at least to adult eyes). 102m/C DVD . FR Freddie Highmore, Mia Farrow, Adam LeFevre, Douglas Rand, Penny Balfour; D: Luc Besson; W: Luc Besson, Celine Garcia; C: Thierry Arbogast; M: Eric Serra; V: David Bowie, Madonna, Jimmy Fallon, Robert De Niro, Anthony Anderson, Chazz Palminteri, Snoop Dogg, Jason Bateman, Harvey Keitel, Emilio Estevez.
