Ministry of Public Buildings and Works, assistant inspector of ancient monuments, 1961-63; University of Exeter, lecturer in medieval archeology, 1963-67; All Souls College, Oxford, visiting fellow, 1967-68; University of Pennsylvania, University Museum, director, and professor of anthropology and of history of art, 1977-81; Christ Church, Oxford, Lecturer of the House, 1983-86; University of Oxford, professor of archeology, 1997-. Director of several excavations and investigations including Nonsuch Palace, 1959-60, Repton (with wife), 1974-88, 1993, and many others; consultant for Canterbury Cathedral, St. Alban's Abbey, and Cathedral Church.
