Lily (Scacchi) is the lonely wife of reporter John (Wilby), living in India in 1954. She cannot nurse her newborn daughter and turns to the ministrations of bossy AngloIndian nurse Mary (Jaffrey), who is soon living in their household and having the child fed by her own sister, Blossom (Gupta).
