A Home at the End of the World
A Home at the End of the World ★★½ 2004 (R)
Cunningham adapted his 1990 novel, but the beauty of his prose gets lost in the transition. Sweet-but-awkward Bobby Morrow (Farrell) meets shy outsider Jonathan Glover (Roberts) in 1967 Cleveland. When Bobby is orphaned, he moves in with the Glovers (Spacek, Frewer) and stays with them even after Jonathan takes off for gay life in the New York. Bobby later follows and then bunks with Jonathan and his older, platonic roommate Clare (Wright Penn). Jonathan is in love with Bobby but it's Clare who seduces him and gets pregnant. When the threesome move out of the city and try to raise the baby together, Clare soon realizes that the emotional intimacy between the two men leaves no room for her. Farrell is tender, but the storytelling is disjointed and the ending somewhat abrupt. Farrell's controversial frontal nude scene, allegedly cut for being distracting, was not restored for the DVD release. 95m/C VHS, DVD .
