The Long Goodbye
The Long Goodbye ★★★ 1973 (R)
Raymond Chandler's penultimate nov el with the unmistakable Altman touch— which is to say that some of the changes to the story have pushed purist noses out of joint. Gould is cast as an insouciant anti-Marlowe, the film noir atmosphere has been transmuted into a Hollywood film neon, genre jibing abounds, and the end ing has been rewritten. But the revamping serves a purpose, which is to make Mar lowe a viable character in a contemporary world. Handsomely photographed by Vil mos Zsigmond. Don't miss bulky boy Ar nold's cameo (his second film appear ance). 112m/C VHS, DVD . Elliott Gould, Nina Van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Henry Gibson, Mark Rydell, David Arkin, Warren Berlinger; Cameos: Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Carradine; D: Robert Altman; W: Leigh Brackett; C: Vilmos Zsigmond; M: John Williams.
