Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron ★★ 2002 (G)

Spirit is a wild stallion and leader of his herd, who is captured and treated badly by a Cavalry Colonel (Cromwell) until he escapes with the help of a young Lakota brave, Little Creek (Studi). Action sequences are impressive, even breathtaking, but the simplistic story and constant musical clues to the moods expressed on screen wear quickly. Combination of traditional 2-D and computer-generated 3-D elements doesn't always work, either. On the other hand, the animals don't speak (except for some of Spirit's thoughts in a voiceover provided by Damon), and there are no wacky sidekicks to clutter what is a pretty serious story for an animated feature. 85m/C VHS, DVD . USD: Kelly Asbury, Lorna Cook; W: John Fusco; M: Hans Zimmer, Bryan Adams; V: Matt Damon, James Cromwell, Daniel Studi.
