What Lies Beneath
What Lies Beneath ★★ 2000 (PG-13)
Empty-nester Pfeiffer wanders around a seemingly haunted house suspecting neighbors of murder and finding out more about her scientist husband's past than she'd like. Zemeckis shoots for Hitchcockian suspense but manages mostly intermittent jolts and occasional wit. The “surprise” ending, telegraphed by the film's marketing campaign, has nothing to do with the film's first hour, which has everything to do with atmosphere and setting up distractions. 130m/C VHS, DVD . Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer, Diana Scarwid, Joe Morton, James Remar, Miranda Otto, Amber Valletta, Katharine Towne, Victoria Birdwell; D: Robert Zemeckis; W: Clark Gregg; C: Don Burgess; M: Alan Silvestri.
