In the 17th century, two feuding noblemen occupy different parts of the same crumbling castle because of their declining fortunes. They live to make each other miserable and marry money. Papkin (Polanski), a boastful popinjay, is enlisted by Czesnik to help him woo a supposedly wealthy widow in return for the chance at romancing Czesnik's pretty niece, who has her own romantic plans.
