Bernet Kempers, Karel Philippus

Bernet Kempers, Karel Philippus, Dutch musicologist; b. Nijkerk, Sept. 20, 1897; d. Amsterdam, Sept. 30, 1974. He studied with Sandberger at the Univ. of Munich (Ph.D., 1926, with the diss. Jacobus Clemens non Papa una seine Motetten; publ. in Augsburg, 1928) and completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Amsterdam in 1929 with his Her inner ignsmotieven, leidmotieven, grondthema’s. He taught music history at the Royal Cons, in The Hague (1929–49) and at the Amsterdam Cons. (1934–53); was also privatdozent (1929–38), lecturer (1938–46), reader (1946–53), and prof. (1953–63) in musicology at the Univ. of Amsterdam. He was the ed. of the complete works of Clemens non Papa.
