Bridge, (Sir) (John) Frederick (b Oldbury, Worcs., 1844; d London, 1924). Eng. composer, conductor, and organist. Boy chorister, Rochester Cath. Org., Holy Trinity Ch., Windsor, 1865–9. Org., Manchester Cath., 1869–75, prof. of harmony, Owens College, Manchester, 1872–5. Deputy org., Westminster Abbey, 1875–82, org., 1882–1918. Presided over modernization of Abbey org., 1884–1909. Cond., Royal Choral Soc., 1896–1922. First Prof. of Mus., Univ. of London, 1903. Arr. mus. at 2 coronations (1902 and 1911) and for Queen Victoria's golden and diamond jubilee services (1887 and 1897). Comp. mainly oratorios. Knighted 1897.
