Bronskaya, Evgenya (Adolfovna)
Bronskaya, Evgenya (Adolfovna), outstanding Russian soprano; b. St. Petersburg, Feb. 1, 1882; d. there (Leningrad), Oct. 12, 1953. She first studied with her mother, E. de Hacke; then in Milan with Teresa Arkel; made her operatic debut in Tiflis in 1901; subsequently sang in Kiev (1902–03) and in Moscow (1904–05). From 1907 to 1910 she sang with a traveling Italian opera troupe, performing in Italy, France, and the U.S. (Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia). Returning to Russia, she was a member of the Maryinsky Theater in St. Petersburg (1910–23); from 1923 to 1950 she taught voice at the Leningrad Cons. She was a brilliant coloratura soprano, particularly impressive in the roles of Lucia, Gilda, and Violetta.
