Brown, Maurice J(ohn) E(dwin) English writer on music; b. London, Aug. 3, 1906; d. Marlborough, Sept. 27, 1975. He was educated at the Univ. of London (B.Sc, 1929; B.Mus., 1939); then pursued a career as a high- school and grammar-school teacher; concurrently devoted himself to research, studying various aspects of the life and works of Schubert; his Schubert: A Critical Biography (London, 1958; Ger. tr., 1969) is a standard source; he was also an authority on Chopin. In addition to many articles for music periodicals, he wrote Schubert’s Variations (London, 1954); Chopin: An Index of His Work in Chronological Order (London, 1960); Essays on Schubert (London, 1966); with O.E. Deutsch, Schubert: Die Erinnerungen seiner Freunde (Leipzig, 1966); Schubert Songs (London, 1967); Schubert Symphonies (London, 1970).
